Develop North PLC has supported the achievements of young people across the North East after sponsoring an award at the third annual NE Community Champion Awards.
The event, held at the Vertu Arena, home of the Newcastle Eagles, brought together more than 200 guests including nominees, families, teachers and community representatives to recognise young people making a positive contribution to their communities.
Opening the ceremony, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cllr Henry Gallagher, congratulated the nominees and winners, describing their stories as a reminder that “positive change begins close to home”.
Develop North sponsored the Special Recognition Award, which recognises young people whose actions demonstrate courage, resilience and compassion.
Michelle Percy, CEO of Develop North, said: “Events like this really help to shine a light on the very best of the North East community spirit and youth development and typify everything that is truly great about this wonderful region, its history and its roots. As a North East based business, we are honoured to present this year’s Special Recognition award.”
Two Special Recognition Awards were presented on the night.
Oliver Hills was recognised for the commitment he has shown as a young father. After learning at just 14 that he was going to become a parent, he chose to enter care so he could remain with his son when the child was placed into care. Despite moving through multiple foster placements, he has continued attending school, achieved Maths and English qualifications and is working towards his GCSEs while supporting his son’s wellbeing.
A second award was presented to Caleb, Jake and Jayden, who helped a man in distress on Scotswood Bridge. The boys spoke to him calmly, reassured him and remained with him until emergency services arrived. Police later praised their bravery and maturity in a potentially dangerous situation.
The awards, organised by Northern Leaders Trust and the Association of Education Advisers, recognise achievements across eight categories including community contribution, volunteering, fundraising, environmental action and courage.
Northern Leaders Trust CEO Lee Kirtley said the evening was “a testament to the incredible contributions of our young people” and thanked sponsors for helping make the event possible.
Develop North was one of several regional organisations supporting the awards programme, alongside businesses including BAM Construction, AtkinsRéalis, Brims Construction, Muckle LLP, Ryder Architecture and The Education Network.
